Welcome
guests: June Bolen, Jeanne Lloyd, Chuck Holly, Terrell Sessums,
and Steve Gaskins our Law Enforcement honoree
The guests were introduced
by the president.
Our Law Enforcement Honoree
needed to return to his official duties and so to accommodate this, the President switched the normal order of the
meeting. Sgt. Gaskins is with the Florida Highway Patrol. The President shared
with the membership some of Sgt. Gaskins’ previous accomplishments and
recognitions. These included:
-
2007 state
officer of the year for his action which involved rescuing an abducted child
from a moving vehicle in
-
recognition by
the FHP and Mothers Against Drunk Driving for having over 100 dui convictions
-
Multiple trooper
of the month citations
Sgt. Gaskins answered
several questions from the members and guests. This time was quite interesting
and entertaining for the group. President Bell then presented Sgt. Gaskins with
the SAR Law Enforcement medal and certificate.
The meeting recessed for lunch.
Following lunch, President
Bell reconvened the meeting.
The minutes of the October
meeting were approved.
The secretary reported on
two requests from the Florida Society. The first was a request to become a “Friend
of the Library” with a donation of at least $25. These funds go to a trust fund
which supports the work of the NSSAR library. Since the state cancelled the “365”
program (asking members for $3.65 per year for the society’s trust funds) the
secretary suggested that those willing to add a dollar or two to their dues
check might consider doing so for this cause. The second request was for the
chapter to support the Center for Advancing America’s Heritage with a monetary
donation. After some discussion Luke Lloyd moved that any money given above the
dues by the members would go to the library fund and that $50 be donated to the
CAAH from the chapter treasury. Jack seconded this motion which passed.
The treasurer reported a
balance of $2,129.95 in checking and $59.16 in petty cash. Expenses this month
included a large order to the NSSAR merchandise store for ROTC medals, member
name tags, and next year’s Fire and Law Enforcement awards. Also, a roll of
stamps was purchased from petty cash for the Registrar.
Luke Lloyd, our Registrar
gave his report. Currently there is one application and two supplementals
at National. Ira Ward’s application was approved recently. Luke provided a
recap of the recent policy change at National regarding the use of DAR record
copies as lineage proof.
Vice President Yarnell
reported that the CAR will be joining us for our December meeting. Bob has
planned a small activity that will allow the SAR and CAR members to interact.
He reported on the meeting schedule for the first few months of next year. Alan
suggested that the Color Guard be in uniform for the meeting to which those
members agreed.
Jack Bolen, as chair of the nominating
committee shared with the membership a slate of chapter officers for 2009.
