MINUTES of Chapter Meeting

Meeting date: September 21, 2013

 

Call to order: A monthly meeting of the Sons of the American Revolution was held at Piccadilly Cafeteria, Tampa, Florida on September 21, 2013. The meeting convened at 12:00 pm, President John Skillman presiding, Mike Frayn, secretary.

 

Compatriot Jack Bolen gave the invocation. Compatriot Ham Evans led the Pledge of Allegiance. Compatriot Luke Lloyd led the SAR Pledge. 

 

Introductions of Compatriots and Guests.

 

Members in attendance: Chuck Bearss, Alan Bell, Jack Bolen, David Bryant, Glenn Clepper, Robbins Denham, Terry Doan, Paul Ergler, Ham Evans, Paul Farley, John Faulk, Bill Floyd, Mike Frayn, Brian French, Cy Gamber, Thomas Johnson, Charles Klug, Luke Lloyd, David MCallister, Marty Miller, Gray Reese, Terrell Sessums, John Skillman, Ken Skillman, John Totten, Jerry Walters and Dick Young.

 

Guests in attendance: June Bolen, Scott Peeler, Bob Denham, Marilyn Gamber, Margie Reese, Ellie Skillman.

 

Introduction of Past Presidents.

 

Reports from the Board of Governors:

 

President:

·         SAR Store having a sale. Suggested members make any purchases such as name tags while sale is going on.

·         2 Eagle Scout certificates were awarded. Terry Doan has another ready to go out.

·         President Skillman will be attending the Desoto DAR meeting on 10 January and the South Coast SAR meeting on 1 February. He will be giving his presentation in costume of the General George Washington's messenger.

 

Vice President:  

·         Compatriot Dick Young attended the Fall BOM. He reported the following.

o   Supplemental application fees likely to increase.

o   Next National SAR meeting will be in Greenville, SC in the summer.

o   Tampa Chapter was awarded the Partners in Patriotism Award.

o   John Skillman received the Liberty Medal for 10 new member sponsorships.

 

Secretary:

·         Compatriot Mike Frayn asked for additions or corrections to the minutes of the May 2013 meeting.

Hearing none, President Skillman approved the minutes as published on the website.

·         2014 dues notices will be passed out to all members at the meeting to reduce postage cost. Was asked to verify all contact information.

 

Treasurer:

·         Current Checking account balance $2388.82

·         Thanks to Compatriot Luke Lloyd's donation in May the checking account remained above the balance the incurred monthly fees.

 

Registrar: Not present. No report.

 

Committee Reports:

Color Guard:

Compatriot Alan Bell reported that the Color Guard was present at the Honor Flight return on 4 June.

 

Program and Events Chairman: Compatriot Young reported that speakers are booked for all but March meetings and Compatriot Mike Frayn is working on the USO. The October speaker will be from the American Legion to present the Wreaths Across America program.

 

New Business:

Compatriot John Skillman calls for the election of nominating committee. John submitted his own name. Alan Bell and Jack Bolen volunteered. All members were in favor.

 

President Skillman recessed the meeting for lunch at 12:30pm. The meeting resumed at 1:00 pm.

 

Guest Speaker:

Compatriot Mike Frayn introduced the speaker from Central West Florida Honor Flight, Mark Van Trees. Honor Flight was started in 2004 with the mission to transport WW II veterans to Washington DC to see their memorial. There are currently 104 hubs across the country. All staff are volunteers. 99% of donations are used to pay for flights and associated expenses. The Central West Florida hub has transported 872 veterans on 12 missions. It supports 5 counties. There are approximately 28,000 WW II veterans in the 5 county area. There are approximately 1.6 million WW II veterans alive but they are passing away at 500 each day. 18 million served. 1.8 million were women.

 

Mark Van Trees was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation and a $100 donation to Honor Flight West Central Florida from the chapter.

 

New Members: President John Skillman presented David Bryant, Glenn Clepper, Brian French, Thomas Johnson, John Totten and Nigel Nicholson (Dick Young’s nephew, accepted upon his behalf) with their membership certificates and lapel pins and they were welcomed into the chapter.

 

Presentation of Chapter Awards: Ham Evans, War Service Medal (Vietnam). Cy Gamber, 25 Year Membership Certificate, Don Middleton 10 Year Membership Certificate (not present, to be delivered by Alan Bell), Luke Lloyd, Liberty Medal (2nd Oak Leaf Cluster) and the first Roger Sherman Medal in the Tampa Chapter was awarded to John Skillman for three years of service as Medals & Awards Chairman.

 

Announcements:

Jack Bolen – Civil War round table this Wed. Speaker is David McCallister.

DAR/SAR joint BBQ 11/3 Lettuce Lake Park. Members to pay their own way.

 

Ellie Skillman won the 50/50 drawing and donated the proceeds to the chapter.

 

Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 2:00.
