Board of Management Meeting

August 15, 2015

The Board meeting of the Tampa SAR Chapter was held at 10:00am at the Piccadilly Cafeteria on Dale Mabry Drive in Tampa, Florida Saturday, August 15, 2015. 

President Dick Young called the meeting to order at approximately 10:00am

Compatriot Dr. John Goolsby gave the invocation.

Board Members Present:  Alan Bell, Dave Bryant, Terry Doan, Paul Ergler, Brian French, John Goolsby,  Charles Klug, Robert Yarnell and Dick Young.

President Dick Young distributed a Board Meeting agenda dated August 15, 2015 outlining the following topics.

Financial Update: Treasurer Paul Ergler stated the Tampa Chapter SAR had a bank balance of $4,714 as of August 15, 2015.

Tampa SAR Chapter was invited to the Family Heritage Festival at the John Germany Library on October 18th (Sunday) 9:15 am to 3:00 pm.  President Dick Young and Brian French volunteered to attend this event and represent the Tampa SAR Chapter in an effort to recruit new members.

Flag Certificates: President Dick Young indicated an interest in Tampa SAR Chapter participating in the Flag Certificate program which is a SAR prescribed procedure to properly display and care for the US Flag.  After the meeting President Dick Young distributed the following remarks.

In regards to Flag Certificates, I pulled the following off the SAR website...

The Flag Certificate, authorized in 1987, is presented to individuals, companies and government agencies that fly the United States flag for patriotic purposes only. It is not to be given to any commercial enterprise that obviously flies it for advertising purposes.

Color Guard Opportunities

President Dick Young indicated an interest in the Color Guard participating in at least 4 events in the coming year.

The Color Guard committed to participate in Wreaths Across America at the American Legion Veterans Cemetery on Saturday December 12. 

The Color Guard tentatively committed to present the colors at the DAR 125th Anniversary Luncheon on Saturday October 31.


Other Tampa SAR Chapter Initiatives Discussed

Chapter Historian Bob Yarnell will work on getting Knight Essay submissions this year.  Brian French stated he could get at least one submission and will coordinate with Bob Yarnell

Dave Bryant will make the Scouts more aware of the Eagle Scout Scholarship Contest.

Terry Doan will work on how to include the Enhanced JROTC Award into our ROTC/JROTC Recognition Awards.  President Dick Young volunteered to help with this project.  

President Dick Young stated he will pursue the American History Teacher Award and see if we can get any interest.

President Dick Young will make contact with the FHP and HCSO for Law Enforcement Commendations. 

Dave Bryant will try to stimulate some interest in the Fire Safety Commendation.  Those will be presented in November.

Terry Doan proposed awarding two Bronze Good Citizenship Medals to people he works with. 

Dick Young reminded members of the September meeting and Terrell Sessums will be the speaker.

It was discussed where to hold the 2016 Officer’s Tampa SAR Installation meeting.  It was the consensus the Rusty Pelican is the preferred location with the tentative date of the meeting of December 12, 2015.

Dick Young offered the idea to award Lissette Young a SAR medal for her contribution to the Tampa SAR Chapter. The Board members heartedly agreed and voted to approve to honor Lissette Young with the appropriate medal.  It was also discussed and approved awarding Mini Marlor a SAR medal for her CAR leadership.

Compatriot Dr. John Goolsby gave the benediction.

President Dick Young adjourned the meeting at approximately 11:15am.

The officer nominating committee of the 2016 Tampa SAR Chapter met after the meeting to discuss developing a slate of officers to be presented to the chapter members for a vote.
