Meeting Notice, November 2007

 

Gentlemen,

            The next meeting of the Tampa Chapter will be held on November 17th in the private meeting room of the Piccadilly Cafeteria, located at 11810 Dale Mabry Highway North, Tampa, Florida (813-963-1660). Meetings begin at noon but members arrive as early as 11:30 for a time of camaraderie.

            Our program this month will involve the presentation of the SAR Law Enforcement Award. Vice President Allen Bell is acquainted with this year’s recipient and spoke highly of him at last month’s meeting. We hope to have a nice turnout to honor this officer.

            Also, we will elect the 2008 chapter officers at this meeting. The nominating committee will make its report and then nominations will be accepted from the floor.

            Finally, we’ll celebrate the acceptance of three new members, John Sessums, Jeffrey Alexander, and Paul Christian by presenting their membership certificates.

            I trust you’ll make every effort to attend. The company and conversation alone will make the trip worthwhile.

2008 Dues Notice

 

Attention current members: Your 2008 dues must be paid by mid December. The amounts have not changed from last year:

            National Society dues: $25.00        Florida Society dues: $20.00   Tampa Chapter dues: $15.00

            Total: $60.00

 

Please make your checks payable to FLSSAR Treasurer. You can give me your check at either the November or December meetings or mail it to me at 7507 Summerbridge Dr., Tampa, FL 33634

Minutes of the October 20, 2007 meeting of the Tampa Chapter SAR

 

President Neuguard called the meeting to order at 12:00. Luke Lloyd offered the invocation. The pledge to the flag and the pledge to the SAR were offered.

 

Members present: Luke Lloyd, Cy Gamber, Don Weir, Dick Hurley, Marty Miller, Ed Neuguard, Alan Bell, Robert Yarnell, and Kevin Yarnell.

Welcome guests:  Jeanne Lloyd, and Kyle Barbieri

 

The president introduced the guests.

Our speaker, Kyle Barbieri, spoke prior to lunch so that he might finish in time to travel to a weekend class he is teaching. Mr. Barbieri is a Social Studies instructor at Tampa Catholic High School. Kyle spoke on the Electorial College looking first at its history and the reasoning behind the Constitution framers. He then helped the members understand its strengths and weaknesses, finishing with possible ways to reform the College.

 

The question and answer session that followed was extensive and proved the interest of the members in the presentation but also furthered our appreciation for Mr. Barbieri’s knowledge. We have extended an invitation for him to join us next year.

 

The meeting recessed for lunch.

 

Following lunch the President reconvened the membership for the business meeting.

 

The minutes of the September meeting were approved with the correction that Don Weir was present.

 

Allen Bell discussed the color guard’s participation in the Town and Country Veterans Day parade. The date is not certain. Allen will find out and let the color guard member’s know. Also, we’ll plan on being in uniform for the December meeting with the CAR.

 

The secretary read an invitation from the Hillsborough County JROTC programs for a Veterans Day program, November 3rd, at 11:00.

 

The Treasure reported a balance of $2081.10

 

The registrar, Luke Lloyd, gave an update on the status of those applying for membership. He has spoken to 4 prospects in the last few weeks.

 

Allen Bell reported that next month’s meeting will be our awarding of our Law Enforcement Award to a local sheriff.

 

Our newsletter continues to struggle for a variety of reasons. The secretary was asked to send a simple mailing as a means of providing notice of the next meeting.

 

The nominating committee did not have a report ready.  Election of officers will be held next month. A slate of officers will be presented at that time and nominations will be taken from the floor as well.

 

The secretary has asked the current Florida Society President, Grant Wallin to attend our January meeting so that he might install the officers and speak to the members. Our usual date, the third Saturday, conflicts with the State Society’s Winter Board of Management meeting. The membership agreed to move the January meeting to the 2nd Sat. if our meeting room is available.

 

Dick Hurley won the 50/50 drawing. The treasury was thus enriched by $5.00.

 

President Neuguard led the recessional. Chaplain Llyod gave the benediction. The meeting adjourned at 1:29 pm.
