American Revolution Notes

Dec. 23, 1783  Washington’s resignation.

With the peace treaty ending the War for American Independence signed and ratified, the British evacuated New York in late November of 1783.  On Nov. 25th Washington led his army into New York to celebrate the final victory.  A little over a week later Washington said farewell to his officers and headed south towards Annapolis, Md., where the Congress was temporarily meeting.

On December 23rd, Washington addressed Congress.  He thanked them for their support and made a plea that his officers be treated properly and paid what was promised to them.  Finally, he ended his remarks by saying:

"Having now finished the work assigned to me, I retire from the great theatre of action; and bidding an affectionate farewell to this august body, under whose orders I have so long acted, I here offer my commission, and take any leave of all the employments of public life."

When news of this reached Europe, many people could not believe that Washington had voluntarily relinquished power.  This act, along with his handling of the Newburgh Conspiracy cemented in place the idea of the military being subservient to the civilian political power.
